Drinks and Appies plus Fireworks

July 24th. We gathered at Patricia and Colin's for Drinks and Appies. We enjoyed a fabulous light show of Fireworks and an almost full moon. The Fireworks were part of Nanaimo's Marine Festival and preceded the World Famous Bathtub Races on Sunday the 25th.The Appies were scrumptious and everyone ate maybe just a wee bit too much!!!

Newcastle Island Excursion July 14

Twenty three of us took the short ferry ride to Newcastle Island and spent the day walking the trails and exploring. We had a great picnic lunch at Giovando's point and lookout.

The first 2 books I would like to share are: The Time In Between by David Bergen. Charles Boatman leaves the Fraser Valley of BC and returns to Vietnam where he had fought as a young reluctant soldier. His daughter Ada and son Jon then travel there to search for him.This is a story of there quest.

The Private Patient by P.D. James An investigative journalist dies following surgery in a private clinic in Dorset.

Annual General Meeting Monday June 21

Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Monday June 21 starting at 7:00 PM with a pot luck supper. Remember to bring your own plates, cutlery, mug and non alcoholic beverage. A buffet table will be set up for everyones contribution to the dinner so that we can all share in a delicious smörgåsbord.

The Annual General Meeting is planned to start at 8:15 PM. Come and help us elect our executive for 2010-11.

A fabulous west coast dinner with Alsatian Bacon Tart, Radish Salad, Oven Roasted Herb Potatoes, Baked Halibut with Wasabi,Soy, Honey and Lime, Roasted Asparagus with Red Pepper Relish, followed by Chocolate Raspberry Pavlova for dessert. 18 of us enjoyed this wonderful menu and a really fun evening. Sorry, no pictures this time.............too busy eating and talking! Thanks to our hostess and hosts Chris, Bill, Andrea and Ed.

Music, singing along with guitar, washboard, spoons, mouth organ. A great evening with lots of laughs and good food. No karaoke machine needed just lots of songs from the 70's. Thanks Mike and Teresa!

February 14th:

Join us for a fantastic Sunday Brunch and Live Theatre in Qualicum.

We will going to the Qualicum Memorial Golf Course to enjoy their Grand Buffet. Once we are all fed, it's off to the Echo Players Theatre to see their presentation of The Kingfisher.

Monthly Activities:

Our Mahjong group is expanding to more players.
Karl is starting up a billiards/pool evening
Pub Nights and Pub Lunch have been well attended and we are looking forward to our next outings

Canadian Champions

This afternoon a small but mighty group of us attended the Junior Canadian Football Championship held here in Nanaimo. Our own VI Raiders won the championship for the second year in a row beating the Edmonton Wildcats 51 - 14. The game was exciting and not one sided as the score indicates. A great afternoon. Way to go Raiders!!!

Seawall Walking on Tuesday Mornings!

It looked like rain as we headed from home this morning, however, meeting up with HCNC friends at the Pearson Bridge in Maffeo Sutton Park made the grey skies clear!!! What a treat today- we had 5 regulars with us and 3 visitors from Yellowknife, 2 from Sarnia, Ont., and one from Surrey join in the 6KM seawall walk. The cruise ship traffic makes our downtown come alive, and we enjoyed visiting with the Mounties and helping out with taking pictures for the tourists as they passed our way. "Tea on the Quay" was our final destination, and it was a great place to enjoy each other and our visitors! I will post a picture of this morning's group- with thanks to Mac- as soon as I get it. Want to join us? Just show up at Maffeo Sutton Parking lot- and find us right by the walking bridge over the Millstone River at 10:00AM. It's right by the Pearson Bridge.

HCNC Hiking Group

Hi - the Harbour City Newcomers Hiking group meet every Wednesday at the Northfield parking lot just off the Parkway. We usually meet at 9:30 a.m. but in good weather (usually the summer), we sometimes meet earlier so that we have an opportunity to try longer hikes or hikes that are a little way out of town i.e. Mount Washington.

If you are new to hiking it's a good idea to somewhere between late fall and early spring when we will be doing easier hikes/walks.

The most difficult hikes we've done so far this summer are Mount Prevost, Mount Washington and of course the local mountain - Mount Benson.

Our First Sunday Brunch

Well, the Harbourcity Newcomers club enjoyed its first Sunday Brunch outing this past Sunday, May 31st. Twenty - seven members ventured north to the Shady Rest Restaurant in Qualicum Beach and enjoyed a wonderful meal overlooking the water. After brunch some of the membership took in the local sites or walked along the park that follows the waterfront.

Welcome to the Harbour City Newcomers Club of Nanaimo, B.C. Our Club (HCNC) was established in October, 2007 and we have been growing ever since! We meet each month at the Oliver Woods Community Centre where we have the opportunity to sign up for a multitude of activities and special events. Our meetings are casual and fun, as well as informative. We frequently have a local guest speaker, but like to make sure that we have time to socialize, too. We will help you get to know both the City of Nanaimo and a great group of people who have something in common with you - we’re all “new” here, too! We hope that this website will give you an idea of the scope of the club and we encourage you to contact us – or come out to one of our meetings and meet us in person.

HCNC is open to both men and women - singles or couples, who are new to Nanaimo and the surrounding area. Our club is run by volunteer members who form our Executive Committee and act as Activity Conveners. We are incorporated, and belong to the National Newcomers Council of Canada.

Our mission is to provide friendship and new opportunities to individuals who have recently moved to the Nanaimo area. Our Club wants to help you create a new social network in a casual, supportive, and fun environment. We want to share our experiences in this paradise that we now call home!
